Summer Beauty Essentials

I am very pleased to present my first post as an author of this fine blog! To start off my blogging with a bang, let’s talk about my favorite guilty-pleasure: makeup.

If you live in the Northern Hemisphere like I do, you will probably have noticed that it’s currently Summer. And consequently, it’s probably hot. With the warm weather comes lots of positive vibes and exciting adventures, which means you don’t really have time to be worrying about your makeup melting off your face. Your beauty routine needs to be fuss-free so you have more time for the important things in life (like eating ice cream). Here are some products I’ve been loving this season:

1. A LIGHTWEIGHT BASE

face

When you’re hot and sweaty, a full face of thick foundation is not ideal. A lightweight foundation feels much more comfortable on the skin, especially in the Summertime. I really enjoy the Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup (I wear the shade 3.5) because it feels light yet still provides a medium coverage. I’ve got a handful of imperfections that I prefer to keep covered up, so a tinted moisturizer/BB-cream isn’t quite enough, but I also don’t want the cake-face that is often associated with high-coverage foundations. This Urban Decay foundation is a happy medium.

I also like to use a powder to set my foundation, and keep it from sliding around and sweating off in the Summer heat. A lot of powders tend to accentuate any dry patches on my face (I have a drier skin type), but I’ve found that using a light hand when applying this MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural (in the shade Medium Plus) looks really pretty and natural. It prevents me from getting too shiny throughout the day and makes my foundation last longer, too. I’ve been loving using these two base products together!

2. LOTS OF LASHES

lashes

Just like it’s uncomfortable to wear a lot of heavy foundation in the Summer, it’s also annoying to wear lots of eye shadow. It will crease up and look gross in no time, so might as well skip it. Save the dark eye looks for winter and focus on eyelashes to define your eyes in the Summertime. Mascara is one of my favorite makeup products in general because I think it makes such a huge difference. Since I enjoy big lashes, I go through mascara pretty quickly (especially in Summer when it’s the main star of the show), and so I stick to the affordable drugstore variety. These two are just as good as any high-end brand mascara you can find at Sephora, but you don’t have to feel guilty when it’s gone in a month! I love Covergirl Lashblast Fusion for everyday. It does a good job of hitting all the requirements: length, volume, and separation without smudging. I also really like Maybelline Falsies Volum’ Express for an extra voluminous effect. These are the two trusty mascaras I repurchase time and time again.

3. NO-MIRROR LIPCOLOR

When I’m busy having an great time, I don’t want to be bothered with high maintenance lip liner and lipstick. I don’t want to have to check it all the time to make sure its not on my teeth or half faded away or smudged across my chin. So when I’m not just chucking on chapstick, I love having a neutral lipstick I can easily slap on without a mirror. For this my personal favorite of the moment is Nars “Cruising” lipstick, a beautiful sheer pinky nude color. It gives just the tiniest boost to my natural lip color and a minuscule hint of shine (I hate glossy lips so rest assured this is subtle shine). I also appreciate that it feels just as comfortable as a chapstick. The only downside is the price tag, so I’m dreading running out of this baby.

4. CUTE LEGS, HOLD THE CHEMICALS

The first thing most people think of when they hear “Summer” is arguably “beach” or “pool,” which means your legs are going to be out. I don’t know about you, but I hate shaving my legs. I get razor bumps really easily, but moreover I’m just too lazy to do it all the time. Anyway, for body care, and especially leg care, I’ve been turning to Dr. Bronner’s products, which are full of natural and awesome-for-you ingredients like coconut oil and jojoba oil. I was a bit skeptical of the Lavender Organic Shaving Gel at first because it doesn’t look super appetizing (it’s very dark brown and runny), but in action it is fab! Probably the closest shave I’ve ever had. Finish off with the Lavender Coconut Hands & Body Lotion and you’ve got the sexiest, most Summer-ready legs in town. So before you call me a hippie for my organic and fair trade body products, try them for yourself and then try to tell me they suck… you won’t be able to because they’re delightful!

5. DRY SHAMPOO

Last but certainly not least is the modern miracle product: dry shampoo. When it’s hot and sweaty out, your hair will probably get greasy and sometimes you just don’t have time to wash it before heading to the next adventure. Also, washing your hair every day just isn’t good for it anyway. So for those days in between I’ve been turning to these two dry shampoos. Batiste is a tried and true classic, while the Dove is a newer launch that I also enjoy equally. Besides the grease-destroying powers, I also love the volume and lift dry shampoo provides.

Here’s a photo of me wearing the foundation, powder, lipstick, and mascara. I think I even used the Batiste dry shampoo that day.

So there you have it – my summertime product recommendations. Let me know if you have tried any of these products and what you think of them. Thank you for reading!
